Kate's {See Kate Sew}--Bloom, Baby, Bloom

The main feature of this dress is an intricately built chyrsanthmum in blush pink. Each petal was constructed, faced and placed individually for a boutique feel. The dress sat on the floor for days while I figured out how to attach the petals so that they would stay but also keep their bloomy dimension. In the end I stitched down the short side of the petal and handstitched the tops of each petal back.

I changed a lot from the original June bug pattern,  combining the bodice and skirt for the most part with an assemetric placket from the original design. I redesigned the sleeves, turned them upside down and and self-faced them for a modern clean cut design and added a matching stand-up ruffle collar. This dress is fully lined with muslin. I added one gore on the left side to continue the assymetric line and add a structured and modern feel. I kept one side of the original junebug placket and added more workable buttons. I wanted to keep the main feature of the junebug dress (the cute buttons) but change it up a little bit!

Jessica Crapo's {Running With Scissors}-- Plaid Pizzazz

Colder weather made me think more along the lines of separates for the Junebug pattern, specifically a jacket and knit bubble skirt.

I liked the double breasted button closure and trapezoid center bodice shape in the original, and designed the jacket around those central elements.  The jacket is cut on grain with the gray/white plaid, except for the center panel which I chose to cut on the bias so the plaid  drapes on the diagonal to mix it up a bit.  The jacket is lined in white, as you can see in the hood, and I love the pop of color in the lime buttons.

The skirt is a comfy knit with pockets!

I sewed welt pockets on the front of the skirt, using the coordinating jacket plaid on the bias again for the pocket cuffs.

The skirt has a thick elastic waist with a bubble hem, which I think looks so cute on little turquoise legs!

Jessica Peck's {Sweetie Pie Bakery}--Woodland Tea Party

I was torn with this week's challenge. The Junebug dress screamed pea coat to me but as I was out purchasing fabric, I found the perfect greencorduroy-for a dress. Since I was already set on thejacket, I went with both figuring it was the perfect attire for a late fall woodland tea party!

The jacket is re-purposed from an adult hounds-tooth jacket scored from the goodwill.  I wanted something full and fancy to go over the dress and accommodate the fullness of the skirt.  I made the flap stationary on the right side of the dress, as it buttons over the left, with piping on either side.  I added a peter pan collar and used full length, set-in sleeves.  I chose to extend the line from the bodice flap into the skirt, adding a black ruffle that follows along the bottom hem of the jacket.

The dress is a fine wale, kelly green corduroy.  Eliminating the flap, I still wanted to keep the reference to the original dress and used a print for the bodice.  I created the cameo for the chest using embroidery thread and french knots.  It took me quite a while to do the french knots, but I love the added detail.  I widened the neckline to more of a ballet neckline and changed the sleeve to a set-in sleeve to slim it out.  I took the sleeve down to the elbow and added a satin bow in the back.  For the skirt, I used a very full rectangle skirt, with an underskirt and a tulle insert for additional fullness and flare.

I think Aeris felt like a princess with the full bottom on this dress.  I've never made such a full skirt, let alone adding tulle to one, and questioned the amount of gathering I was doing along the way.  In the end, it turned out fabulous and she wants to wear her "fancy coat" everywhere we go.

Kristin's {skirtastop}--Sweet Tartan Dress

I was excited to sew the Junebug Dress after admiring it for a while, and had a lot of fun remixing it! My first idea was to flip the bodice around so the buttons were in the back, because I wanted to preserve the effect of the sweet buttoned bodice in the original pattern but needed a blank slate to play with for the remix. I then drafted a wrap front bodice and chose a pink and mustard cotton plaid (tartan!) to overlap a double layer of cream batiste. The batiste lining makes it very soft and comfortable to wear (a must for a three-year-old!). A gathered overskirt sweeps across another layer of batiste and comes together at the left hip, and a removable underskirt adds fullness. I omitted the sleeves, added a chocolate brown grosgrain ribbon sash that tucks under the bodice flap in the back, and added two cream buttons on each side to finish off the look.

My little Scottish model is now ready for a party in her Sweet Tartan Dress! Come visit me over at skirt as top today for more about my inspiration, see how close I came to my initial sketch, and check out lots more photos!

Susan's {Living With Punks}-- Barn Dance Bug

DSC_15061

For some reason I could not get denim out of my head for this challenge! I don’t know…I haven’t seen a denim dress since the 80’s, but on a toddler, denim anything is fab! So I went with it! I fully lined the dress in a darling, unconventional oversized check.  The Junebug pattern is so girly and sweet and I didn’t want to loose those attributes.  The button panel is especially feminine, so I elongated the bodice, increased the buttons and dropped the waist.    I also added a soft scallop to the hem and lengthened sleeves.

I was inspired by the lining fabric to create a feminine, diamond quilted bodice.  I love this part!  I also utilized the lining fabric and strategically covered the buttons to continue the patterned shapes through out the design.  I wanted to keep her accessories uncomplicated, so I covered a simple, plastic headband to match!

Stefanie {Girl. Inspired}--Mommy and Me Dress

What a treat, to use the Junebug dress for this week's pattern remix theme.  It's such a darling dress to begin with and it was important to me to maintain the buttoned bodice as the core design element while incorporating design aspects of my own.

I created the Mommy and Me dress using a beautiful dupioni silk.  Ruffles, my favorite, were added to the sides of the front panel and silk-covered buttons complete the bodice.  I added a bit of length to the sleeves and pulled them in for a tailored look.  I also added pintucks to the sleeves to compliment the pintucks in the hemline.  A fuller skirt in this fabric flares out to form the perfect silhouette.

A dress this sophisticated needs the perfect accessories:  lacy knee-highs, brown Mary Jane shoes, and a vintage-inspired headband.  I searched for knee-highs, but could only find them in plain white, so I gave them a little swim in a cup of tea, added crocheted lace, and a cute, velvet bow.  What a fun fix to dress up this outfit!  The headband came together with a velvet ruffle, a silk flower, and a bit of lace and tulle to finish it off.  I kind of love this headband - wish I could pull off wearing it myself!  I didn't have any shoes on hand since this sweetie's feet grow faster than my weeds, so I took a pair of hand-me-down patent leather shoes and gave them a few good coats of brown spray paint.  It worked like a charm to turn old, scuffed shoes into new!

I was concerned about taking Addie out into winter weather to photograph the outfit, so I made a little capelet out of brown velvet.  It snaps together on a diagonal line, complete with a ruffle and buttons, to mimic the main design element on the dress.
Finally, Addie's dolly got a new dress, too.  My dry, rough hands nearly shred the tiny silk pieces into nothing, but we came out with a finished dress.  And it was sure a good thing because my favorite pictures were captured once Addie forgot I was holding a camera and started playing mommy to her little baby!
I hope you'll come visit me at girl. Inspired. where I'll be sharing more pictures and how-to for the Mommy and Me dress and accessories!

Pattern remix 2

Pattern remix 1

This week I made two outfits by remixing the pattern. The first outfit is a tunic length top made out of satin. I was inspired by this fabric. I love the bold directional pattern and it begged to be made into this top! The sleeves are elbow length with a band at the elbow. The front button plaquet was shortened to just 4 buttons making the top a baby doll style. A patterned bubble skirt gives it a fun feel. Perfect for your girly girl.
The second outfit is a linen shorts jumper. I wanted to make this outfit modern and devoid of ruffles and the usual girly details. The buttons were replaced with exposed zippers to make entry and exit easy. I love the recent trend of exposed zippers and they work so beautifully with the clean style of this romper. I added a band under the zipper top and attached shorts to the bottom rather than a skirt. The shorts have a rolled cuff. This is the perfect outfit for summer with sandals or winter with a shirt underneath and tights. The fit is flattering and fashionable while still being cute enough for even your fancy nancy. Check out more details and photos at my blog, The Train To Crazy.

Danielle's {My Sparkle}--The Every Color in the Box Dress

Aside from the Junebug pattern, fabric was my biggest inspiration for this dress. Specifically Kaffe Fassett's Shot Cotton collection. When I first laid eyes on it, I swooned a little and wanted to use every single beautiful color. The fabric is woven with two different colored threads in the warp and weft creating these muted gradients of color that give the impression of subtle texture. It reminds me of colored pencils being scribbled across a page. In addition, it is lovely and soft and lightweight. I chose Apricot and Navy Blue as the primary colors because I love that combination. I wanted this dress to be playful but a little sophisticated and I hope the color-palette does that.

I created these scallops and appliqued them to the bottom of a full skirt in order to show off as many colors as possible. I wanted the scallops to be a little askew and abstract, almost like they'd been colored on with pencils. So, as I stitched each layer (no heat and bond here...these suckers are completely stitched layer by layer in order to keep the movement of fabric ) I offset them a bit to give that effect. I had to fight my urge to try make things line up perfectly to get this to work. To compliment the shorter fuller skirt, I dropped and tightened the waistline which then meant I'd need to add an opening in the back so the dress could be put on (the original design was loose enough that the waistline didn't need to be broken to get into it). And I added long sleeves because I think they are cute and not often seen and seem to give balance to the silhouette. I also changed the front buttoned panel to a curve to echo the curved scallops.

I'm not going to lie. This dress was fairly involved sewing-wise (for me anyway). I slaved away on it for quite awhile and may or may not have dumped a cupful of cheerios on the floor of my sewing room for my baby to eat in lieu of feeding him lunch so I could get it done. I love it though. I hope you do too!
