Skirting the Issue: Sizing Charts and Prize Packages!

In the sewing world we know that pattern sizing and Ready-to-Wear (RTW) sizing are very different.   (Which really would be a great discussion post in and of itself, let's do that another day, shall we? I think so.)

But for "Skirting the Issue," we do want the girls and Foster Care Moms to easily recognize sizes of skirts---so, if it is okay with all of you, let's use Ready-to-Wear sizing for the skirts?  Okey.  Dokey.

We have spent some time going over lots (and I mean LOTS!) of RTW sizing charts lately and have done a bit of compiling, measuring girls, and have come up with two measurement charts to work with.

Please keep in mind that they are not perfect (every designer and clothing brand always use their own individual sizing charts) but as GENERAL sizes they will (with fingers crossed ) work just fine.

For little girls we have put in measurements for a waist and then a knee-length skirt measurement in inches (sorry for our metric friends).  And here is what we have come up with....
And here is what we came up with for Teenage girls.  Let me tell you, this chart was trickier.....the sizing in the Junior world varies GREATLY (I think even more than womenswear from all the sizing charts I have recently looked at).  So, please keep that in mind.   Again the chart is in inches (sorry I forgot to put that in), but it should work as well for a good starting point.
HIP Measurements are usually waist plus 10 inches----and we know that's where most teen girls wear their skirts so may want to use a hip measurement rather than a waist if it is a fitted skirt!
(So for a size 1, the hip measurement would be 34 inches and so on.)

And now to PRIZES!  We are so thankful to our sponsors....they have been so generous and kind and just all-around fantastic.

These can be won by just donating a skirt (or ten).  I guess the more skirts you have in there, the better your chances get....hmmmm.....

There are prizes to be won from....

  2. good work on the size charts! I only go up to a 12 in my shop, so I don't know about the older sizes but the little girls chart looks great! Some of my sizes run about 1" shorter but for this project it's probably best to trend towards the longer end just in case someone is tall:)

  4. Would you mind explaining a bit more about the teen sizing chart.....I don't have teenagers (yet) and lived in Europe when I was a teenager myself.....Is the size 1 just for a tiny teenager (like size 0 is for a (too) tiny adult??) Thank you!

    1. Yes, it is for a slim girl who could probably fit into children's sizes but fits better into the adult shape. Does that make sense?
